After leaving Vancouver at 7pm on Friday night and battleing traffic along Highway 1, my friend and I arrived in Clinton, BC at around midnight at the Cariboo Lodge. The owner (Rob) was nice enough to leave us a key for the room and we got some much needed sleep after the long and harrowing drive along the Fraser canyon highway.

We arrived at Beaverdam Lake a little later than expected to find 2 dedicated fishermen peering in to their ice holes carved out by a power auger. There were reports of other Finns being on the ice earlier that morning but they retired to other duties for the day. Apparently there were a few nibbles on the line that morning but no fish were landed. During the day we saw the likes of snow, rain, freezing rain and wind. But none of that dis-heartened our souls and we kept on with the ice fishing as planned. It was nice to see the local authorities out that day, the local RCMP came out to visit us on the ice to make sure we were catching fish! Unfortunately none of us landed any fish that day. Special thanks goes out to Jari Vainionpaa (sp?) for breaking out the “toxic pig” for us to huddle around once the sun decided to retreat for the day. What a beautiful evening to be on the ice with Jari, Curtis, Carl and myself. It was snowing quite heavily but the good company and warmth from the toxic pig kept us going in to the evening.

We decided to try our luck at a different lake that day, so we packed up and headed to Ashcroft, BC in the morning. Apparently Barnes Lake is a lake where many-a-ice-fishing-derby’s took place in the past held by the FCF&GC. Its nice to see that with time passing by, you can still go to lakes in this region which are still great fishing holes and hold such beautiful scenery. On our drive up to the lake it was quite foggy in the valley but as we ascended towards the lake the air cleared. We were treated to some beautiful weather that day. It was almost too nice, we were down to our t-shirts and basking in the sun and clear blue sky. There was evidence of car races on the lake and the ice was beginning to crack in various locations. Fortunately the ice was still atleast 2′ thick and we had no hesitation of finding numerous places on the lake to try our luck. We had a few nibbles here and there, Curtis was able to land a nice spawner about 12″ in length. At about 2pm we decided to pack it in and head back to town.
Thanks again to Jari, Curtis & Carl for making this another memorable ice fishing trip. I hope we can all do this again sometime soon and keep this little tradition up for many years to come. Hopefully we can attact some other fisher-folk to join us in this beautiful winter ritual.
Hello Everyone, just a reminder the monthly meeting for February will be on Tuesday February 7th, thank you
A few members are planning an ice fishing trip to Beaverdam Lake near Clinton on the weekend of March 3rd/4th.
Rob Clement will be looking in to hotels/motels in the area so that if people come from out of town, then we’ll have a place to stay. I would like to get an idea of who wants to go so we can possibly book some rooms.
If anyone is interested they can either call Rob Celement: 604-671-7315 or e-mail him: jr_clement@hotmail.com
or they can call Markus Haukka at 604-589-8057

Annual Sturgeon fishing along the fraser river with BC SportFishing guides, a good time as always, the biggest sturgeon of the day was a whopping 9 foot 2, and the most fish caught by a single boat was 48!
Club annual hunt
Oct. 1st weekend came and went. For the annual club deer hunt we had a show of nine
hunters at the Paska Lake cabin.
As for all of us hunters the outdoors with fresh air and good friends make a good hunting
trip and if you bring something home besides dirty clothes it becomes a great trip.
This time we had Markus Rauhala and Jari Vainionpää collect a nice two point buck each
where the rest of us saw some game but nothing that was legal to hunt.
Thank you for everyone for being a part of our club activity.
Juha Askola
